Jesus defines prayer throughout his word. In this brief bible sermon, we will highlight the important points concerning real prayer. Prayer that gets God’s attention involves:
- BELIEVING – Mark 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
- HEART – Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
- APPROACH – humility not arrogance. God is not your bellboy. 2Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
- DILIGENCE – Luke 11:8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity(persistence) he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. This is what pray without ceasing means: a continual, relentless, non-stop action that God loves!

Prayer has no substitute. No stand in. No back up player should something go wrong. Prayer is either present or it is not. Every bible sermon on prayer has taught us so.
Pray Pray Pray
Families that pray together have a greater chance of staying together. Preachers have said this over and over In Bible sermons over the years. They cry out, “We need to pray!” But, do we listen? In a world where brokenness seems the norm, we really do need to pray. Too many Christian homes have succumb to being broken by the attacks of the devil.
Or, have they?
Perhaps the real question isn’t about what the devil is doing, but what the saints of God are doing, or not. A successful family has always been a prayerful one – struggles and all. Prayer has always been the fundamental, the principle, and the foundational element of every Christian walk and home.
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” Luke 18:1

The infamous Lord’s Prayer was never spoken by the Lord in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 so it could be repeated in vain repetition. His intention was for our prayer lives to show(demonstrate) the instruction – when you pray, he said, say, Our Father, etc,. Is your prayer life saying something?
Prayer is fervent, effectual(James 5:16), full of faith, humility, and submission to the will of God and extremely diligence. The type of persistence that causes Jacob to hold the angel until he’s blessed, the woman with the issue of blood to press through a crowd until she is healed, and Zacchaeus to climb a sycamore tree so he can see Jesus.
Bottom line: true prayer is effectual and fervent, full of faith and trust, shrouded with humility, unshakeable. Pray without ceasing means to never stop praying. No matter what! Pray until you see the cloud the size of a man’s hand (1 Kings 18:41-46). Pray until the fire falls. Pray until your church experiences revival. Pray with and for your family no matter what it looks like.
True prayer is asking until you’ve received. True prayer is seeking until you’ve found. True prayer is knocking until the door swings wide open.
